2021.10.21 12:07 thumbdance Travel hospice nursing - thoughts?

Hey everyone, I've been thinking of leaving my job and starting travel nursing. My specialty is hospice.
Does anyone have any experience with travel hospice nursing? The company I work for currently has had a couple travel nurses, so I know it is possible.
Has anyone had experience with this? Are there any thoughts or cautionary tales I should be aware of with travel hospice nursing?

2021.10.21 12:07 SamG9889 Day 4. COVID and Withdrawal at the same time

Today is day 4 of sobriety. I'm 36 and have smoked heavily every day since I was 16. I started having terrible aches and pains on day 2 and found out I'd caught COVID. Having the intense withdrawal symptoms at the same time as COVID is proving to be pretty intense. I'm not going to give in, but the body aches are really putting my body in pain and sleep is something of the past. I can tell even being pretty sick that my mental clarity is returning. I will not give in. I smoked dabs, and several grams of medical every day so I know my tolerance was quite high. This group has helped me. I've lurked for years and finally made the decision to quit after I went on vacation and realized how lonely I was.

2021.10.21 12:07 Ninguern How to navigate through pages with Svelte Kit?

Hi folks, so, I'm comming from Next.js where I used a router to navigate between pages . I could do something like: router.push('/section/page1'); router.back(); and other things passing query parameters. Does Svelte Kit have a similiar feature or should I use a third party lib to do so?
Thanks ;)

2021.10.21 12:07 seyedhn What does it take to cross the indiedev's valley of death?

This article is primarily for aspiring / beginner indiedevs.
------------------------------------
I recently gave a talk at EGX on what it takes to start your gaming company. I specifically talked about the valley of death, a concept that many indiedevs are familiar with. I decided to compile my thoughts here. My take on what it takes to start your journey as an indiedev is quite different to what you hear most of the time, such as passion, motivation, coding skills etc.
Indiedev's valley of death
If you're new to gamedev, beware that there is a valley of death in front of you. So here is how it works:

  1. You are super hyped about a game idea and you want to make a game that will be on headlines, get 100K of overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam, and revolutionise the games industry.
  2. With all the pasison, you get started working on it. You work on it for a while and you realise your game sucks big time. Back to drawing board, back to keyboard.
  3. Your game is coming into some shape but you figure it is taking waaaaay longer than you expected and you're running out of money.
  4. You try to approach people but since you're no industry veteran, no publisher is willing to close a deal and no investor is willing to give you money unless they see a good vertical slice.
  5. You then decide to self-publish but people tell you that you need a fanbase first. You realise you have 0 social media presence and 0 community. You then decide to join Indie Legion's Discord, sign up to HowToMarketAGame blogs, and subscribe to GameDiscoverCo newsletters. It hits you very hard in the face that you now have to do 5 hours gamedev and 10 hours marketing every day.
  6. You come to the conclusion that building a fanbase and and getting a good vertical slice would probbaly take you 2-3 years. You either come out strong and publishers line up to sign a deal with you, or you quit it all and figure it was all wrong from the very beginning.
Those years of surviving is what I call the valley of death. It takes more than money and skills to make it through.
What I'm going to talk about are the mental models you need in order to make it past the indiedev's valley of death. I'm talking about the internal qualities, not external factors. Money, education and coding skills are external. How you think is internal.
So what does it take to cross the valley?
  1. Proactivity: Steve Covey extensively talks about proactivity in his bestselling book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It is the first and most important habit he talks about. Proactivity is about taking yourself, and only yourself, accountable for your own life. It is about understanding that nothing and nobody is responsible for your success or failure. It's about taking control over things that are within your circle of influence (habits, relationships, lifestyle, choices), and not overthinking about things that are outside that (economy, Covid, law). If you have a proactive mindset, you will not blame the weather, Blizzard, or your girlfriend for your failure. It's all about you and only you.
  2. Perseverence: Now that you know you're the only one responsible for crossing the valley, you need to keep going. It's the urge of not giving up when reality is double hitting you in the face. Sense of failure, getting more unfollows than follows on Twitter, showing your game to your friends and they laugh in your face, your dad telling you that you were better off as a bartender, etc. If you speak to any indiedev, they will all tell you about the 'Give Up!' voice in their head. You need to ignore it and keep going.
  3. Vulnerability: Now that you've learned to silence the 'Give Up!' voice, you need to put down your defensive shield. You're an inexperienced indiedev. Your first few prototypes probably suck. As Jesse Schell says in his book The Art of Game Design, "Your first ten games will suck, so get them out of the way fast". So put your pride aside and open up to feedback and other people's wisdom. Feel easy to throw things away and start fresh. Embrace learning and don't take criticism personal. You will only become a better gamedev over time. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
  4. Frugality: Unless you have six figures or more in your bank account, you need to seriously worry about money! You have to accept that there will be no revenue for at least two years. In order to survive the valley, you need to exercise frugality as much as you can. Things you have to stop doing are: buying a £4 Starbucks every morning, turning on heating and going around in a T-shirt, taking Uber instead of public transport, ordering outside food, and so many other little habits. Sam Altman of Y-Combinator considers frugality as one of the traits of best startup founders: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lJKucu6HJc
  5. Focus: Assuming that you're now going strong on your indiedev journey, it's time to laser focus your mind on the task at hand. Unless you're running full speed to cross the valley within the ~ 2 years time frame, you will run out of resources mid-way. So you either stay at your part-time job / freelance work, or if you decide to go full-time gamedev, then you should go FULL-time gamedev. You also need to focus the scope of your game. Starting with an MMORPG is a terrible idea. You'll never make it. Making a small game, going early access and expanding it over time is a much feasible plan.
Next time anyone tells you 'get a real job', give them a gentle smile and get back to work :)
