2021.10.21 11:26 variant_meme It has been confirmed that Vikings landed in America exactly 1000 years ago in the year 1021 AD (400 years before Columbus). How they got it this precise still confuses me but apparently they used atmospheric radiocarbon signal produced by a dated solar storm to figure out how old the settlement was

2021.10.21 11:26 KermitTheScot About the standard array…
One of my friends outright refused to play in a campaign I was crafting, in spite of having played the game with me before and being excited about this new story, because I told her the Standard Array would be non-negotiable; no rolling this time. I’ve had experiences in the past where players at first level have a +7/+5 to their attack/damage rolls, and are all-rounders who don’t need the help, thus creating animosity in a party of varying skill levels where the most assertive/outgoing people are the first to take action, even if it isn’t their character’s specialty. Like, when the wizard has a higher survival roll than the ranger because rolled stats.
This was my fix. With the standard array, players have to choose where their strengths and weaknesses lie, and at early levels, between a new feat, or balancing some of their stats to round out their proficiencies. Nobody needs to be good at everything, so taking that dump star, to me, is important for unite cohesion. I don’t want to just throw bigger monsters at them, I want them to have challenging fights that rely on them using their character’s skills and learning from each other. I know this is often one big power fantasy, but I feel like having a huge bonus to your skills from the get-go is detrimental to character growth. Rather than arriving on the scene as a bounty hunter whose never lost a quarry (which is a great story, told many times over), I prefer the one who took up the life recently and has a basic skill set, but a lot to learn, thus making the eventual arc of their story more meaningful; they become a badass, they weren’t that way pre-party.
But what do you all think? Is the hate for the SA warranted? Does not allowing for the randomness of a dice roll for stats rob the players of agency? Should I lift the restriction, even if my historical games have not been enjoyable watching super powered parties decimate high-CR creatures they shouldn’t be able to combat?

2021.10.21 11:26 Ricosss A Systematic Review of Intravenous β-Hydroxybutyrate Use in Humans - A Promising Future Therapy? (Pub Date: 2021)
Abstract Therapeutic ketosis is traditionally induced with dietary modification. However, owing to the time delay involved, this is not a practical approach for treatment of acute conditions such as traumatic brain injury. Intravenous administration of ketones would obviate this problem by rapidly inducing ketosis. This has been confirmed in a number of small animal and human studies. Currently no such commercially available product exists. The aim of this systematic review is to review the safety and efficacy of intravenous beta-hydroxybutyrate. The Web of Science, PubMed and EMBASE databases were searched, and a systematic review undertaken. Thirty-five studies were included. The total beta-hydroxybutyrate dose ranged from 30 to 101 g administered over multiple doses as a short infusion, with most studies using the racemic form. Such dosing achieves a beta-hydroxybutyrate concentration >1 mmol/L within 15 min. Infusions were well tolerated with few adverse events. Blood glucose concentrations occasionally were reduced but remained within the normal reference range for all study participants. Few studies have examined the effect of intravenous beta-hydroxybutyrate in disease states. In patients with heart failure, intravenous beta-hydroxybutyrate increased cardiac output by up to 40%. No studies were conducted in patients with neurological disease. Intravenous beta-hydroxybutyrate has been shown to increase cerebral blood flow and reduce cerebral glucose oxidation. Moreover, beta-hydroxybutyrate reduces protein catabolism and attenuates the production of counter-regulatory hormones during induced hypoglycemia. An intravenous beta-hydroxybutyrate formulation is well tolerated and may provide an alternative treatment option worthy of further research in disease states.

2021.10.21 11:26 Benny_Goods Passive income
Ok so I’ve been looking at a few different options for passive income. Helium, planetwatch, deeper network…
What has everyone else been doing or looking at?
I currently run 4 bobcats for helium and make 3+ helium a day combined, I have another arriving soon. Next will be to optimize the setups with outdoor antennas for better coverage while I wait for my next order.
I’m really interested in planetwatch and am interested to hear from all of you if anyone has experience looking at 2 type 1 and a bunch of type 4
As for deeper network I’m just starting to look closer at it
What do you think the most profitable mining? Quickest Roi? The bobcats I have now should take about 60 days (less when I factor in the 5th one).

2021.10.21 11:26 flutesandlow JSki Fastforward or Black Crows Mirus Cor?
Any views on the relative merits of these skis for a 50 year old, overweight intermediate skier looking for a playful front-side ice coast ski? Want to focus on having fun with the kids rather than racing down the hill, but need a decent carver for hard-pack and solo day trips.
These skis are both new this season so very unlikely anyone has skied both, but opinions appreciated!

2021.10.21 11:26 tonks456 How much fun is farming to you?
The following is a bit philosophical, but it gave me a different perspective on D2R and maybe gaming in general. Gaming always had a strong pulling effect on me and especially when I was a kid it was highly addictive to me and also a way to escape the problems of real life. I observed that this foundations that were set in the childhood, like the pulling effect of games, continued to my adulthood. Even though it is easier to deal with it today. Lately I observed myself getting strongly pulled to D2R and I started to play quite a bit these days, even to an extend that it almost had a negative impact on my work life. I became excited about the idea of farming stuff and trading it with good deals up to enigma and have a strong poison necro that can beam itself around and insta kill anything. To get the stuff that I wanted I started trading. The first days I used diablo2 io for trading because it was the top hit on google. But then I discovered d2jsp. This changed my perspective of the game.
But another thing happened as well: A few days ago I stumbled on a relatively unknown youtube channel: Mizaeron because I got hooked by the catchy video where he does 1000 Meph runs and analyzes the loot afterwards. He also has some other videos of 100 runs of Andi / Meph and pit. More or less he always came to the average output of ~0.7 HR / 100 runs with a HR being an IST rune. The exception was the 100 pit runs where he had something like ~1.1HR / 100 runs because of a lucky drop but I don't remember what it was. For the following, I will continue with the 0.7 HR / 100 runs, but you can vary this number as you see fit.
Now we get into the mathy part of this post. If you can do 25 pit runs per hour you end up with an expected HR yield of 0.7 / 100 * 25 = 0.175 HR per hour.
On d2jsp you trade with forum gold (fg). You can buy 290 fg for 10$. An IST trades for about ~200 fg. This means one HR is worth 200fg and roughly 7$ in cash.
Now, what is your goal in d2r? Do you want an Enigma? 30HR. Shako? ~1.2HR. Vipermagi ~0.25HR. And so on.
If your goal is to farm the perfect equipment you can now calculate how many HR you need and how many hours you would have to farm. For a shako you would then need to farm ~7 hours. Without accounting for the time to trade all your items.
But you can do another thing. Because you can buy fg for money, you can calculate the hourly rate of fg in $. With 0.175 HR per hour you end up with ~6 hours farming for 7$. This means one hour of farming is worth 1.2$
How much fun is farming for you? Is it worth it to farm 6 hours for a shako or even 500 hours for enigma?
But the point that got me was that one hour of farming is worth 1.2$ of items. So I can just work in my job for one hour and save me dozens of hours of farming. Now I ask myself: What is more fun to me? Farming 6 hours for shako or working a few minutes and then buying it?
To me this changes the perspective. I know now that for farming hours on end you either have to have a lot of fun with farming or you have to hate your job (a little joke here).
Then I asked myself, what is fun to me in d2r?
